Series in Proverbs - Choose Your Friends Wisely, For You Will Become Like Them

Image
Choose Your Friends Wisely,  For You Will Become Like Them  Proverbs 1:8-19 I believe that most of us have heard our parents' admonitions, “Didn’t you hear what I told you!” and “I hope you learn to make wiser decisions as you grow older.” or “Wait till your kids grow up, and then you’ll understand why I told you not to do that, or hang with that group!” The sage advice of parents usually comes from the hard school of experience and the school of hardknocks. Solomon must have heard both the wisdom of God and the scoldings of parents were the right things to do. This is the setting of Solomon’s next dosage of wisdom to his son(s). So let’s read the first portion of the text. “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s am...

Series in Proverbs - Wisdom and the Fear of the Lord

Wisdom and the Fear of the Lord Proverbs 1:1-7 Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, I read Batman comics with “Riddle me this Batman…” or riddles/comics on the wrappings of Bazooka Bubble Gum, “What  is black and white and read all over?” With this level of riddles, I would have been bound to the naive and gullible group.  As one of the authors of Proverbs, Solomon grew up as the king’s kid in the royal palace, and probably well favored by King David because of his wife, Babsheba. Privilege brought education, nevertheless, because of God he was one of the writers of the Proverbs (riddles or parables) in early eras of the kings, and he gave a plethora of examples of wisdom in the proverbs that were used amongst the wise and sage ( "chacham") , and the naive or gullible (p'ti) , and fool ( "eviyl") .  So as you have already guessed, the new book for our study blog in Scripture is the book of Proverbs. So let’s get started into the realm of wisdom through the ...
